Essenitally following the plans of Steve Ward's Micro SSTC, I built my first MOSFET driven coil using nearly the same schematic. The main differences were that I used a CD4049 in place of a TC4420, and an IRF540 in place of an IRFP460. It still worked reliably, though.

The Tesla Coil that I based this one on can be found at http://www.stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC6.htm

I have this fellow and many others to thank for carefully describing their projects online so that inexperienced experimenters like myself can follow in their footsteps. In this way I appear to know what I am doing ;-)

It's an air core resonator that throws a hissing spark.. ..it must be a tesla coil!

A length of thinn steel wire taken from shielding on a piece of coaxial cable does neat stuff when attached to the top of this thing. My camera was taking exposures of one to several seconds to capture these.

Two steel wires of different lengths were used in this image.
